Hamond Industries Ltd Acquisition by Bohne Spring Industries Ltd
I am pleased to announce that Hamond Industries has been acquired by Bohne Spring Industries Limited. I am confident that our combined capabilities and resources will allow us to meet or exceed the requirements of our customers.
Hamond equipment and personel will be moved to the Bohne Spring Industries location at 60 Coronet Rd, Toronto, on or before November 30th, 2007. We expect the transition to be seamless.
If you are a customer of Hamond, these are the points you need to know.
* If you have placed orders with Hamond already, people from both organizations are already hard at work to ensure an uninterrupted flow of parts.
* If you have not yet placed orders with Hamond, but expect to need parts delivery in calendar year 2007, you should place your orders now with Judy @ Hamond Industries 905-761-9094. There will be some production downtime associated with the move, and the sooner we know your requirements, the better.
* Orders for delivery in 2008 can be placed with Hamond at the number above until November 15th.
* If ordering after November 15th please call Bohne Springs Sales Staff at 416-231-9000 and ask for Chris Wharin, Donna Simpson or Maria St. Amour. You will be able to refer to your parts using the same numbers you are used to, but please mention that they are Hamond parts, to avoid confusion.
* If you have tooling which resides at Hamond, it will be moved to Bohne automatically.
* The staff of Hamond will be moving to Bohne. You can be assured that your parts will be run to the same standards and quality as before.
* Bohne will honour all existing blanket purchase order prices to the end of the current blanket purchase agreement, and all prices for non-blanket orders already accepted by Hamond. New orders will, of course, need to be reviewed.
* During the transition, we will ship and issue invoices from Hamond Industries Ltd until October 31st, and ship and issue invoices from Bohne Springs after that point. In order to keep the books straight, cheques to cover Hamond invoices should be made out to Hamond, and Bohne invoices likewise made out to Bohne.
If you are a supplier of Hamond, here's what you need to know:
After October 31st,
* New purchase orders will be issued by Bohne, although some will specify a Hamond delivery, and some a Bohne delivery.
* some post-processing orders will go out from Hamond's current location and ask to be returned to the Bohne location. Other orders will go out and come back to Hamond. Therefore, we ask you during this period to pay special attention to what is written on the paperwork.
* After October 31st, Hamond receivables will be paid by Bohne.
Contact information for Bohne is as follows:

I am very excited about combining the two companies.
* Bohne is an ISO/TS16949:2002 registered company. Products will be manufactured and inspected according to ISO/TS standards.
* Bohne brings new capabilities to Hamond customers. For instance, Bohne makes coil springs, which should assist customers who wish to consolidate vendors. Bohne also has an extensive short-run and prototyping department.
We are convinced that the combined team of Hamond and Bohne should add significant value to the customer relationship. Both companies build on long traditions of family ownership and high employee loyalty.
Respectfully yours,
Michael Wagner, Director
Hamond Industries Ltd
P.S. you can look at the Bohne web site here: http://www.bohnespring.ca/
And for the curious, it's pronounced like boney.

Lead Times for August and beyond
We're now back from our summer shutdown. While we were shut down, a lot of new orders came in. There is no more free time in August for any of our machines, and most of our machines are tied up for much of September.
We also notice that steel lead times are rising. Some materials you can readily, a week or less from order to delivery. But some materials are taking many weeks. There seems to be no particular pattern to what's fast and what's slow. I suspect the service centers are drawing down their inventory, and it's the luck of the draw whether the material is available here or not.
Therefore, we are strongly recommending that people who are not operating under blanket purchase order agreements place their orders a minimum of 1 month in advance if the part needs no post-processing, and 2 months is better. If your parts need heat treating or plating after manufacture, you should add 2 weeks to those numbers.

Material Pricing
Here's a brief update on material pricing.
Zinc has now fallen from the $2 US/lb that it was late last year to about $1.50 US now. However, many platers buy zinc on contract, and so until their contracts run out, higher prices will prevail. By comparison, zinc was $0.50 in June of '05
Copper is again on the rise. It got down as far as $2.50 in February, but is up around $3.30 now. A year ago it was $4.00, so it's a bit off the peak, but not enough to feel comfortable.
Nickel is climbing and shows no sign of stopping. It's currently about $22.75, up from $16 at the year boundary, from $8 a year ago, and $3 five years ago.
Zinc is used in almost every method of rust-proofing steel (except stainless steel). Nickel is used in stainless steel. Brass is a combination of zinc and copper.

Hamond Industries Ltd Announces New Tooling Program
Hamond Industries, a leading manufacturer of small, custom metal parts, is pleased to announce a new tooling program, suitable for lower volume parts and customers.
Under the new tooling program, only the unique tooling components for each job will be built. Those components which are fairly standard will instead be tooled using Hamond standard components.
The program is suitable for low to medium volume jobs, up to, perhaps, 500,000 parts per year. Beyond that volume, scheduling and wear issues mean that we will offer this option and will continue to tool jobs in the classical way, that is, a complete set of components for each job.
From the customer's perspective, the tooling cost will be less, and the time to build the tooling also less, because we only build those components unique to your job. However, the part price will be slightly higher, because it pays for wear, tear and repair on the shared tools.
How much can this program save? It's hard to estimate. The nature of custom work is that each job is different. But if a customer is willing to work with us, perhaps modifying their drawing to use standard materials, standard material widths, standard hole sizes, etc, so that standard components can be used throughout the job, somewhere between 1/3 and 1/2 of the standard tooling charge (and some lead time) may be shaved off.

Hamond Lead Times for March, 2007 and beyond
January and February were a busy time. Many customers delayed their work out of December and advanced work out of March and into the January & February timeframe. We're not sure why this happened, not sure why it happened all at the same time, but it did, and to some extent it created a logjam on our machines and on the downstream processes (heat treat and plate). During this time, our lead times grew to be uncharacteristically long.
This logjam is now out of our plant (some of the work remains to be heat treated and plated, but that's proceeding well) and so our lead times are back down to normal.
Raw material prices remain high. Zinc & copper, while they have dropped a bit from the peak 3 months ago, still remain at relatively high levels compared to even 6 months ago. If you haven't ordered parts in 6 months, you may be surprised to learn what has happened to raw material prices.
You can see charts a few articles down the page.
Nickel (a major ingredient in most Stainless Steel) is high and climing and shows no sign of stopping. So if you need stainless parts, they're going to be expensive for the next while.
